Sketches

Monica Johnstone, director of communication and advancement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is a semifinalist for the 2017 American Quilter's Society's QuiltWeek, taking place August 16-19 at the DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids. Johnstone was chosen to display the quilt, "Tree #3," along with more than 270 quilts created by other artists for the contest. Winners will be announced at the show.

Al Steinman, director of the Annis Water Resources Institute, wrote an article, “Ecosystem Services in the Great Lakes," published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, and was a co-author of an article, “Grand Challenges for Research in the Laurentian Great Lakes,” published in Limnology and Oceanography. Steinman was appointed to the Great Lakes Early Warning System Work Group, part of the International Joint Commission’s Science Advisory Board. 

Ross Sherman, associate professor of movement science, gave a presentation, "Hydration Provides No Thermo-Physiological or Cognitive Motor Skill Improvement During Passive Hyperthermia and Subsequent Cooling," at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Denver, Colorado.

Bopi Biddanda, professor of water resources, wrote an article, “Global Significance of the Changing Freshwater Carbon Cycle," published in EOS, a publication of the American Geophysical Union.

Jim Penn, associate professor of geography and sustainable planning, gave a presentation, "Small-Scale Traditional Farmers in the Peruvian Amazon: Identity, Perceptions, Historical Discrimination and Recent Change," at the Agricultural History Society annual meeting in Grand Rapids.

Julie White, senior affiliate faculty of writing, was selected to participate in the College Board’s Annual AP Reading in AP Seminar. Each year, AP teachers and college faculty members evaluate and score the free-response sections of the AP exams.
