Seven GVSU alumni named semifinalists for Fulbright ETA grants

Seven Grand Valley alumni have been selected as semifinalists for the 2017-18 Fulbright U.S. Student Program to teach English overseas. 

The application process is a highly competitive nationwide search for the best candidates to complete the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program.

The seven alumni, their graduation year, their hometown, major and intended teaching destination, are as follows:

     Shukri Bana, '16, Kentwood, Michigan; Women and Gender Studies, South Africa

     Katie Gipe, '17, Clarkston, Michigan; Education/English, Spain

     Sarah Cullip, '17, St. Ignace, Michigan; Education/English, Germany

     Alsatia Lohr, '17, Mason, Michigan; English and German, Germany

     Cullin Flynn, '17, Fowlerville, Michigan; Spanish, Germany

     Erika Schmitt, '13, Whitehall, Michigan; Psychology, Mexico

     Angela Schmitt, '17, Jenison, Michigan; Music Teaching/Education, Czech Republic

Grant recipients will be selected from the pool of semifinalists.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant program places grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in classrooms. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program also offers other types of grants, including study/research and travel grants.
