It's among the first steps to studying abroad: getting a passport.

Five students received scholarships to apply for a passport through a collaboration among the Padnos International Center, TRIO Student Support Services and the Oliver Wilson Freshman Academy Program. They are Kambriana Gates, Kiara Clark, Devonté Hillman, Kennedy Robinson and Carlos Calderon.

Gates is majoring in nursing and has a minor in African African American studies. She plans to go to South Africa this summer with the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program.

"I want to immerse myself in a different culture," she said.

Hillman will get a head-start on becoming a doctor when he shadows doctors who work at a hospital in Winneba, Ghana. Hillman is a biomedical sciences major and Meijer Honors College student.

Hillman participated in the Freshman Academy Program and learned about the passport scholarships there.
