Students win first prize for business ideas

Two Grand Valley students each won $10,000 at the 2017 Dolphin Tank — Entrepreneur You Business Plan and Pitch Competition November 9. 

The competition is a funding opportunity for women who wish to start a new business or grow an existing business. Contests were held in Grand Rapids, Detroit and Jackson. Thirty finalists were selected from more than 135 applications, 10 in each location.

The Grand Rapids event was held at the L. William Seidman Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus and sponsored by the Michigan Women's Foundation.

Katarina Samardzija, a junior and a marketing major, won the grand prize of $10,000 in the Growth category for her business called Locker Lifestyle. The company produces wearable products made to securely hold small items for people who enjoy an active lifestyle. 

Samardzija also won the "Best in Tank" award of $1,000. Find out more about her products at www.lockerlifestyle.com.

Rhoda Klomega, a senior and an engineering major, won the grand prize of $10,000 in the Lifestyle category for her fashion business. Delasie, LLC specializes in custom and ready-to-wear handmade clothing and accessories that merge both European designs and African fabrics for men, women and children.
