600 participants ready for Student Scholars Day

The 22nd annual Student Scholars Day, April 11, will feature research presentations by nearly 600 students who were mentored by 175 faculty members.

At the end of the day, student participants will hear from a panel of five faculty members who will discuss how they communicate their research effectively and how their work informs policy, government and business. 

"Research that Relates: Talking about Your Research and Why It Matters," will begin at 5 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center, room 2204.

The panelists are Janet Brashler, professor of anthropology; Merritt DeLano-Taylor, associate professor of biomedical sciences; Rick Rediske, professor of water resources; Michael Scantelbury, associate professor of hospitality and tourism management; and Star Swift, associate professor of business law. The moderator is Mark Luttenton, associate dean of The Graduate School and professor of biology.

Student scholars will be center stage throughout the day as oral and poster presentations will run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center and Henry Hall atrium; film and video presentations will be displayed at the Mary Idema Pew Library, presenters are scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon; art exhibitions will be displayed in the library, exhibition space, from April 4-16, and a Kirkhof Center wall will host a Fishladder exhibit.

The luncheon speaker is Katherine Coburn, Grand Valley alumna who is a graduate student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Coburn, who earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 2015, is conducting research using small molecule inhibitors for an RNA binding protein.
