One of the candidates interviewing on campus for the position of vice provost and dean of students said the definition of student success goes beyond first-year retention and includes other elements such as educational attainment and academic achievement.

Brandon Miller, associate vice chancellor for Enrollment Management at University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, gave a public presentation March 30 in the Kirkhof Center.

He was asked to give a presentation on a topic relevant to student success. He discussed new ideas and trends, like the importance of actively pushing students to the resources they need.

Miller said his guiding leadership principle is to understand the problem before addressing the situation.

"The core of who I am as a leader includes leading a team that supports each other and incorporates the 5Ps: prior planning prevents poor performance," he said.

Miller was named associate vice chancellor and senior lecturer for the College Student Personnel Administration program in 2015. Before that, he served as a consultant for Ellucian from 2014-2015 and director of Enrollment Management and Retention at Texas A&M University from 2012-2014. He also served as assistant vice president for Student Success at Baylor University from 2005-2012.

He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from Baylor University, a master's degree in higher education administration from Texas Tech University and a doctorate in higher education from University of North Texas, Denton.
