In an editorial published April 19 in The Detroit News, Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas said recognizing that parents are a child's first and most important teachers is a critical step in improving education in the state of Michigan.

Haas said working with parents and implementing recommendations from Gov. Rick Snyder's 21st Century Education Commission, which he chaired, is necessary to ensure that Michigan students have access to the high-quality education they will need to work in the future.

The full editorial can be found online at The Detroit News' website.
