Donald Zinman, associate professor of political science, was interviewed by WXMI-TV for a story about the announced retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Médar Serrata, associate professor of Spanish, received the Premio Anual de Ensayo Pedro Henríquez Ureña award for his book, La poética del Trujillismo: Epica y romance en el discurso de la Era (The Poetics of Trujillismo: Epic and Romance in the Discourse of the "Era"). The award is the national literature award in the essay category granted by the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic.

Patricia Clark, professor of writing and Grand Valley's Poet-in-Residence, had her book of poems, Canopy, reviewed by John Freeman on Michigan Radio's "Stateside." Clark is also the author of four additional volumes of poetry: Sunday Rising, Wreath for the Red Admiral, Given the Trees and Deadlifts. The audio review can be heard at michiganradio.org.

Monica Johnstone, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences director of communications and advancement, was named a semifinalist for the 2018 American Quilter's Society's QuiltWeek. Johnstone will display her quilt, "Edenic," during QuiltWeek, set for August 22-25 at the DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids. Quilts were entered in this international competition from 41 U.S. states and 11 other countries.

Deborah Bambini, professor of nursing, gave presentations, "Achieving Fair and Reliable Performance Assessment in Simulation," "The Effect of Faculty Training and Personality Characteristics on High Stakes Assessment in Simulation," and "Using a Shared Mental Model for High Stakes Simulation Evaluation," at the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning Conference in Toronto, Canada.

David Alvarez, professor of English, gave presentations: "'Maritime Necropolis'? 'Aqueous Mass Grave'?: Mortuary Metaphors for Mediterranean Mortalities," at the annual meeting of the American Comparative Literature Association in Los Angeles; "A Burning Desire for Trans-Border Mobility: Harraga Migration across the Strait of Gibraltar in Literature, Photography, and Installation Art," at the Mediterranean Seminar held at the University of Oregon; and "A New Paradigm for Gibraltarian Studies: Gibraltar in Relation to Franco Cassano's 'Southern Thought,'" at the Mediterranean Studies Association held in Sorrento, Italy.

Kevin McIntosh, coordinator of Campus Interfaith Resources, received two Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) grants: the IFYC Leadership Regional Gathering grant will be used for the interfaith conference in October; and the IFYC Innovation Grant will help pilot an interfaith ambassador program and training program for staff and faculty around interfaith leadership and religious diversity.  

Brent Nowak, executive director of the applied Medical Devices Institute, moderated a panel discussion, “Pathway to Innovation – Academia’s Role in Device Development,” at MedDevice Forum in Grand Rapids May 22.

Gleaves Whitney, director of the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, was elected to the Michigan Heritage Leadership Council.
