In the News

Len O'Kelly, School of Communications associate director and assistant professor of multimedia journalism, was interviewed by WOOD-TV for a story about Ionia-based radio station WION refusing to run political ads for candidates seeking local and state offices.

Katie Corker, assistant professor of psychology, was quoted in a New York Times article, "Psychology is having a 'Reformation Moment.'"

William J. Neal, professor emeritus of geology, was a co-author of an op-ed article, “Our Coastal Cemeteries Are Falling Into the Sea,” published in the Raleigh, N.C., News & Observer.

Sketches

David Clark, assistant professor of mathematics, received a Henry L. Alder award from the Mathematical Association of America during the MathFest event in Denver, Colorado. The award honors beginning college or university faculty whose teaching has been highly successful in undergraduate mathematics.

Tim Penning, professor of advertising and public relations, was named a new member of the Public Relations Society of America's College of Fellows, an honorary organization within PRSA comprised of more than 350 senior practitioners and educators who have left a significant footprint on the public relations profession. Penning will be inducted into the College of Fellows on October 6.

Shannon Owen, director of Northern Michigan Programs, wrote an article, "Going First: Being a First-Generation College Student," published in Grand Traverse Woman.

Kirkhof College of Nursing faculty members Melodee Vanden Bosch, Susan Harrington, Nancy Schoofs, Cynthia Coviak and an alumna are authors of an article, "Flipping the Classroom in Health Care Higher Education: A Systematic Review," accepted for publication in Nurse Educator.

John Kilbourne, professor of movement science, gave a presentation, "Moving Education into the 21st Century: Creating Activity Permissible Classrooms," at NeoCon, the design/furniture conference, in Chicago, Illinois.

Ross Sherman, associate professor of movement science, gave a presentation, "Impact of Immediate, Pre-exercise Ingestion of Branched-chain Amino Acid and Taurine on Muscle Soreness and Performance Following Eccentric Exercise," at the International Society of Sports Nutrition Conference in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

Amy Manderscheid, assistant professor of nursing, received a two-year grant from the Pediatric Research Fund, allocated through the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation, for a project, “A Simulation-based Module to Address the Quality and Safety of Emergency Department Management of Neonates with Potential Sepsis, Phase 1: An Inter-Disciplinary Needs Assessment Survey.”
