"We celebrate you and all you have accomplished and will accomplish," Haas said. "You have been a part of our time of stewardship at this great university, and we are grateful. We wait with anticipation to see how you will contribute in your professions and in your communities. You will have an effect, and we call that the Laker Effect."

John C. Kennedy, member of Grand Valley's Board of Trustees, gave the commencement address and received an honorary degree. Kennedy, president and CEO of Autocam Medical, will end his second term as a trustee at the end of this month.

Honorary degrees were also presented to state Sen. Arlan B. Meekhof and Raleigh J. Finkelstein.
