GVSU best in Michigan, Top 25 nationally among Gilman Fellowship-producing institutions for 2016-17
Grand Valley State University students earned more nationally-competitive Gilman Fellowships for the 2016-17 academic year than any other college or university in Michigan, and ranked in the top 25 Gilman Fellowships-producing schools in the nation.
Grand Valley was also recognized as a leading Gilman Fellowships producer for first-generation college students, students who identify as racial and ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students studying in STEM fields, and the total number of locations students traveled to while completing their study abroad.
A total of 20 Grand Valley students were awarded the Gilman Fellowship and successfully completed their study abroad experience. The students earned a cumulative total of $82,500 in awards.
Five other Grand Valley students have also been selected to receive Gilman Fellowships for Summer 2018. Their names, hometowns, majors, and country of study are below:
Theo Randall, Grand Rapids, Michigan; art history; Italy
Daniel Arnold, Wayland, Michigan; business management; Ukraine
Bailey Webb, Rochester Hills, Michigan; accounting and management; Ghana
AJ (Albert) Carter, Royal Oak, Michigan; computer science and anthropology; China
Jessica Knoertzer, Allendale, Michigan; biomedical sciences; Peru
Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply.
Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies, making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.
