Event features 'wonder women' of family-owned businesses

Three women from West Michigan will share their experiences as leaders of their family businesses during a panel discussion March 26, sponsored by the Family Owned Business Institute in the Seidman College of Business.

The event will take place from 8-10 a.m. in the L. William Seidman Center on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. The panel discussion begins at 8:30 a.m.

Amy Sparks, Megan Spruit and Rachel Mraz will talk about their leadership styles, how they overcame obstacles to build their careers and expectations of gender roles in business.

The event is free. Diana Lawson, dean of the Seidman College of Business, will serve as moderator.

Ï Amy Sparks is president & CEO of Nuvar, Inc., in Holland. She previously served as president  and CEO of SoundTech Inc., a privately owned manufacturer of acoustical and thermal insulation solutions. Sparks began her career in public accounting with Plante & Moran in Grand Rapids. She earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Grand Valley and an MBA from the University of Michigan. 

Ï Megan Spruit is president of Grand Rapids Metrology, where she oversees daily operations for all five locations throughout the state. Spruit joined Grand Rapids Metrology (formerly Grand Rapids Scale Co.) in 2012 as the fifth generation of family management. She worked for several years in business development at Ace Hardware's International Division in Chicago. Spruit earned a bachelor’s degree in international management from Butler University and is working toward an MBA from Grand Valley.

Ï Rachel Mraz is a wealth management advisor and senior vice president at Merrill Lynch in Grand Rapids. She is a four-time Grand Rapids Business Journal "50 Most Influential Women" honoree and was named the 2010 Athena Young Professional by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce. Mraz earned a bachelor's degree in science from Cornell University and a master's degree from the American College of Financial Services.
