Brandon Carr, Baltimore Ravens defensive back and former Laker football standout, was nominated by his team for the NFL's Walter Payton Award, recognizing his community service work and talent on the field.
Each NFL team nominates a player for the Man of the Year Award, which will be announced February 1 prior to the Super Bowl.
Carr, a native of Flint, played for the Lakers from 2004-2008, when he was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Now in his 12th season of professional football, Carr sponsors a football camp, encourages reading among young students, and promotes healthy lifestyles for students through the Carr Cares Foundation.
Carr visited Grand Valley in June at the dedication of the Jamie Hosford Football Center.
As a Laker, Carr played on two NCAA Division II national championship teams and ended his collegiate career ranked sixth-best in Division II history for number of pass deflections with 50.
