GVSU Science Olympiad celebrating 35 years

More than 1,000 local middle and high school students will become disease detectives and meteorologists, analyze potions and poisons, and dissect the concepts of thermodynamics, during the 35th annual Region 12 Michigan Science Olympiad tournament.

The competition, presented by Grand Valley State University's Regional Math and Science Center, will take place March 23 from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. in various buildings on the Allendale Campus. The awards ceremony is from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Kelly Family Sports Center.

Students from 40 middle schools and 28 high schools from across West Michigan will showcase their knowledge in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and technology during the competition. Winners will advance to the state tournament April 27 at Michigan State University.

Region 12 covers Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties. The tournament is sponsored by Verizon, GE Aviation, Miller Johnson, Haviland Products Company, BizStream, and National Defense Industrial Association - Michigan Chapter.
