Around the world, international alliances and partnerships are increasingly under scrutiny, with the U.K. poised to leave the European Union and tensions between the United States and Iran are escalated from the U.S. pullout from the Iran nuclear deal.

With these current international pressures in mind, the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University will host its first Common Ground Initiative event of the season, a presentation by historian and best-selling author Lynne Olson.

Olson will focus on the importance of international alliances and their role in 21st century international politics.

Lynne Olson: Chasing Allies

September 3, 7 p.m.

Charles W. Loosemore Auditorium, Richard M. DeVos Center

401 Fulton St. W., Grand Rapids, MI 49504

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested at gvsu.edu/hc/events.

Olson's presentation will shed light on many current international situations, including trade and tariffs, the rise of global nationalism and populism, and the reorganization of NAFTA to the USMCA.

Olson will also discuss how international alliances shaped the outcome of World War II and the circumstances that created the Allied Nations.

Olson is an American historian, journalist, and the author of several New York Times best-sellers.
