To stay active while remote learning and socially distancing, sophomore Rebecca Guilford has challenged herself to be a top 10 participant in Recreation and Wellness’ #GVLakerStrong Challenge.

The free, daily challenge began this week and goes until May 31. It’s open to students, faculty and staff members; and they can sign up at any time. Participants are encouraged to log 30 minutes of physical activity each day on the Recreation and Wellness online dashboard.

Kayla Cupples, assistant director of marketing for Recreation and Wellness, said the overall goal of the challenge is to help the Grand Valley community get active and be well.

“We’re hoping to provide some motivation to stay active, while also staying as connected to each other as possible during this time,” Cupples said.

To further incentivize participation, all who reach 150 minutes per week will be entered into a weekly drawing. Minutes must be logged on the dashboard within seven days of completion.

Guilford said she has been participating in the challenge by lifting weights, walking, biking and practicing yoga. She said being active helps her feel more productive in her day.

“It’s important to be active not only for your physical health, but because it also helps your mental health,” Guilford said.

While people are social distancing and living a more sedentary lifestyle, Cupples said the Recreation and Wellness team got creative to deliver fitness and wellness programs virtually.

“There are so many different ways to utilize technology that can help with staying physically active and socially connected,” she said.

A variety of at-home workout videos and live workouts can be found here. The Recreation and Wellness team encourages participants to also their activity by tagging @gvsurecreation on Instagram or Twitter and using the hashtag #GVLakerStrong.
