Winterfest events bring students together on campus

The temperature was low, but spirits were high as Lakers enjoyed a hot chocolate bar, ice carving and other winter-themed activities on campus.

Winterfest, a Grand Valley tradition from years past, is back and will run through February 14 on the Allendale Campus.

LeaAnn Tibbe, associate director of Student Life, said there has been a need for activities to help students feel a sense of community.

“Without some of the events like Presidents’ Ball or football games where they feel the pride of being a Laker, we thought this is something that could be done safely,” she said.

Planning for the outdoor festivities began in November, and was encouraged after the success of the Haunted Arboretum event.

“We’re hoping students can get outdoors and interact in a safe environment,” Tibbe said.

Weather permitting, upcoming events include a photo opportunity with huskies, an ice rink, cupcake decorating and more.

Lights on the trees surrounding the Cook Carillon Tower, in addition to the tower being illuminated with blue light, are also part of the celebration.

Winterfest is a collaboration between the Office of Student Life, Campus Activities Board and Making Waves. University Archives has also set up a “History of Winterfest” in the Cook-DeWitt Auditorium.

“We hope people walk through the archive and enjoy our history, what it’s given us and what we’re repeating for Winterfest,” Tibbe said.
