GVSU to hold campus safety briefings following MSU tragedy

UPDATE: February 23, 2023: Because Grand Valley has moved to remote status, a single online only safety briefing will be held at 1 p.m. . A recording of the briefing will be available on GVSU's website shortly after it ends.

Grand Valley will host two safety briefings on Thursday, February 23rd to provide the campus community with information about the plans and systems in place at GVSU should there be an active shooting event.

Led by Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Brandon DeHaan, there will be one briefing held in the Loosemore Auditorium inside the DeVos Center at the Pew Campus at 1 p.m., and one inside the Louis Armstrong Theatre at the Haas Center for Performing Arts at 3 p.m. The briefings also will be viewable via Zoom and recordings will be made available online following the conclusion of the event. 

In addition to these briefings, an enhanced cadence of safety information will be implemented across campus.

Other safety resources available to the campus community include:

• Grand Valley Police provide online resources for how to respond in the event of an active shooter situation on campus.
• Anyone in the campus community who knows of a student who may be distressed and in need of assistance, please make a referral to our CARE Team (Coordination, Assistance, Response and Education) so that we can connect them with services to help.
• Sign up for the GVSUAlert! system to receive email and text alerts in the event of a campuswide safety issue. Students may add GVSU community supporters, such as parents, guardians and spouses to this alert system.
• The Laker Guardian app allows users to contact GVPD if they are in trouble, send tips, and notify GVPD and trusted contacts to check if they are alone or in an unfamiliar place.
