Grand Valley’s quest for a Division II football national championship cleared a major hurdle last Saturday. Now, it’s on to the Lakers’ next opponent in the playoffs.
The No. 2 Lakers, who earned the No. 2 seed in Super Region Three, knocked off rival and two-time defending champion Ferris State, 21-14, in another thrilling matchup on November 18.
The Lakers (10-1) advance to the regional semifinals and will host Pittsburg State, the region’s No. 3 seed, at 1 p.m. on November 25 at Lubbers Stadium.
No. 5 Pittsburg State (11-1) beat Indianapolis, 35-14, to advance in the regional bracket. The Gorillas were the co-champions of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association this season, sharing the title with Central Missouri, the No. 4 seed in the region.
The Lakers will see another strong defensive effort on Saturday. The Gorillas placed five players on the All-MIAA First Team: defensive lineman Dubem Okonkwo, linebackers Jack Barkley and Alex Gaskill, safety Michael Lacey and cornerback Rico Payton.
