No. 2 Lakers welcome Michigan Tech for Homecoming game

No. 2 Grand Valley brings its high-powered offense to this weekend’s Homecoming game against Michigan Tech. The Lakers and Huskies meet at 3 p.m. on October 28 at Lubbers Stadium.

The Lakers have been gaining momentum since losing their season opener to Colorado School of Mines. Grand Valley is on a six-game winning streak after beating Northern Michigan, 73-14, on October 21.

The 59-point margin of victory is the largest in the series history, eclipsing the 53-point Lakers’ win over the Huskies last season in Allendale.

Grand Valley (6-1, 3-0 in GLIAC) owns the No. 1 scoring offense in the nation, averaging 52.9 points per game. The Lakers are also third in Division II in total offense with 500.9 yards per game.

Senior kicker Josh Gorball was selected as the GLIAC’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his game against Northern Michigan. Gorball was 10-for-10 on point-after attempts and kicked a 53-yard field goal, the second-longest in program history, to close the first half.

After a three-game winning streak to begin the season, Michigan Tech (4-3, 1-3 in GLIAC) has lost three of its last four games, including a 35-21 loss to Ferris State on October 21.

Junior quarterback Alex Fries averages 217.7 passing yards per game with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Senior running back William Marano leads the Huskies’ rushing attack, averaging 65.6 yards per game.
