Laker teams launch national title hopes with start of NCAA playoffs

Football, women's soccer, men's and women's cross country competing in NCAA postseason; volleyball aiming for GLIAC title this weekend

Football

The Lakers make their 24th appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs as the No. 2 seed in Super Region 3. Grand Valley hosts the University of Indianapolis at 1 p.m. on November 23 at Lubbers Stadium.

Saturday’s game marks the 25th meeting between the teams and the first since 2018, which the Lakers won 31-7. GVSU holds a commanding 21-3 record in the all-time series.

GVSU is looking for its fifth national title and first since 2006.

The Greyhounds are led by quarterback Gavin Sukup and running back Jon Lewis on offense while linebacker Clay Schulte, defensive lineman Aaron Barnett and defensive back Key Crowell are the defense’s leaders.

Tickets and parking passes for Saturday’s game are available at the GVSU Ticket Office website .

Fans can watch the game online on ESPN+ . The radio broadcast is available on WLAV-FM 96.9 ( wlav.com ), WJRW-FM 106.1 and WLCS-FM 98.3.

Women's soccer

For the 21st year in a row, the Lakers are heading to the NCAA Division II Tournament and looking to add their eighth national championship in school history and first since 2021.

The Lakers are the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament’s Midwest Region, opening their postseason against No. 6 seed, the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 11 a.m. on November 22 in St. Louis. 

The Tritons (14-3-3) claimed their first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship with a 1-0 win over McKendree University in their conference's tournament final.  

Grand Valley has a 63-12-8 all-time record in the postseason with 16 regional championships and seven national championships, a Division II record. For more information on the team’s journey in the national tournament, visit its website on the Athletics home page .

Cross country

Grand Valley’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on November 23 at Arcade Creek Cross Country Course in Sacramento, California. 

The men's 10k race begins at 1 p.m. EST with the women's 6k race following at 2:15 p.m. EST.

The team sealed their trips to the national championships following another successful performance at the Midwest Regional Championships. The women’s squad won its 23rd consecutive regional title while the men won their 22nd consecutive regional title.

Volleyball

The Lakers have a shot at the GLIAC Tournament Championship following their three-set sweep over Davenport in the quarterfinals on November 20.

Grand Valley, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, faces the No. 3 seed, Northern Michigan in the semifinals on November 23 with the championship match set for November 24. No. 1 seed Ferris State is the tournament host.

Heading into the GLIAC’s championship weekend, Grand Valley is ranked No. 2 in the Midwest Region behind undefeated rivals Ferris State at No. 1. The NCAA Tournament begins December 4.
