No. 1 Lakers, No. 3 Ferris State clash in Anchor-Bone Classic

Two of the top teams in Division II meet again with the edge to a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title riding on the outcome.

No. 1 Grand Valley (7-0 overall, 3-0 in GLIAC) faces one of the season’s toughest opponents with No. 3 Ferris State (6-1, 3-0) visiting Lubbers Stadium on October 26 in the annual Anchor-Bone Classic. Kickoff is 3 p.m.

The game has been a sellout since mid-September.

The winner of Saturday’s game gains a significant one-game advantage over their rival in the race for a GLIAC championship with three weeks remaining to the season.

The Lakers lead the all-time series with 14 wins compared to the Bulldogs’ 11. The Lakers also have the upper hand on the Bulldogs in recent meetings, winning three of the last four games.

Both teams statistically rank among the nation’s best. Ferris is second in Division II in total offense, averaging more than 518 yards per game; while Grand Valley is 14th, averaging 433 yards a game.

Ferris’ defense ranks fourth in Division II, giving up 212.6 yards a game; while Grand Valley is seventh, allowing 237.3 yards per game.

Ferris’ offense runs through quarterback Trindad Chambliss, who leads the GLIAC in passing yards per game, total passing yardage and quarterback efficiency.

Grand Valley running back Khalil Eichelberger sparks Grand Valley’s offense as the conference’s top rusher, averaging more than 80 yards a game.
