Student Philanthropy Week spotlights connections, belonging

Members of Phi Kappa Tau plan to raise money to help student parents with the cost of child care. Grand Valley's Bowling Club hopes that money raised will help keep the organization's costs low, allowing more students to join.

These are only two examples of student organizations that are among the featured groups in a crowdfunding campaign for Student Philanthropy Week, which runs through September 30. Coordinated by University Development, events throughout the week and money raised put a spotlight on the impact that philanthropy has on every Grand Valley experience.

Noah Masen serves as Phi Kappa Tau's philanthropy, service and social chair. A double major in marketing and human resources, Masen said fraternity members will dedicate their fundraising efforts toward the GVSU's Children's Enrichment Center's Student Parent Support Fund.

"We want to aid parents who need assistance to help them eliminate a barrier to their college degree," Masen said.

Delaney Morrin is a junior who is studying wildlife biology. Morrin has been a Bowling Club member for three years. Money raised by club members next week will go toward travel, tournament fees and other expenses.

"We were able to get new uniforms this year thanks to people's generosity from the 2023 Student Philanthropy Week, and we are really excited about the new design," Morrin said. "We have a bunch of new first-year students, so we are hoping for a lot of donations."

The featured organizations will host their own fundraising challenges throughout the week. Campus community members can choose to support these groups or any student organization.

Laura Aikens, vice president for University Development, said: “Student Philanthropy Week aligns directly with Grand Valley's focus on a student-empowered education. Activities throughout the week show students that they don't have to wait to be philanthropists. They can start now transforming lives and strengthening their community through time, talent or resources.

"It's incredibly encouraging to witness their passion for giving back and their commitment to shaping a better future for every Laker."
