She acknowledged widespread anxiety across campus — but
underscored the university’s commitment to relationship-centered
care, ongoing communication and shared governance. Mantella
emphasized that while the university cannot control federal
decisions or national rhetoric, GVSU can remain steadfast in its
mission, deeply care for our students and each other and foster
belonging for all members of the community.
"We defend our freedoms and reinforce the right of
everyone to feel safe while our values continue to illuminate the
way forward,” Mantella said.
Yet, rather than retreat from these challenges,
Mantella urged the university community to step forward together —
not only to defend the enduring values of education but to model the
type of inclusive, resilient and student-centered community the
world needs now more than ever.
“While other universities are retreating, GVSU is
advancing,” she said.
She called on the community to remain focused on
delivering on GVSU's mission, be forward leaning and fiscally
prudent. She also urged the university to see this period as one of
opportunity and innovation and to unite in GVSU's work and in the
strength of community.
She committed to create stability where the university
can. As a signal of commitment to stability and excellence, Mantella
announced at that meeting
the appointment of Jennifer Drake as the
permanent provost and vice president of Academic Affairs.
The announcement was greeted with excitement and
appreciation for the input sought.
She concluded with a commitment to maintain ongoing
opportunities to communicate with faculty members and staff,
including early engagements, continued updates, deep dives on
strategic issues and listening sessions.
