Visual thinking workshop connects art, health professions for students
Standing before a painting and discussing with classmates what they see is status quo for students majoring in visual arts. It was new territory for students majoring in nursing and health professions October 3, when artist-medical educator Alexa Miller led a workshop in visual thinking by using the artwork in the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences as a backdrop.

Fall Arts Celebration art exhibit explores the mysteries of Mars
Throughout the years, Mars has been depicted in multiple forms as societies around the world have gazed at the Red Planet. During this year's Fall Arts Celebration, the "Mars: Astronomy and Culture" exhibit will bring together 140 photographs, drawings, movie posters, book covers and more spotlighting Mars. A special reception for the exhibit, which will include a virtual reality simulator, will take place September 13.

Art Gallery exhibit, events to explore the ebb and flow of artist's creative process
A new Art Gallery exhibition at Grand Valley will examine the ebb and flow of artist Herbert Murrie's creative process while reflecting back on his painting career and looking forward to a new body of his work. An opening reception for the exhibit will take place January 18. The exhibit will be on display January 15 through March 30.

Fall Arts Celebration to offer free events of art, music, dance, poetry and more
Acrobatic dancers flying through the air, reflections on resegregation, holiday music from France, a collection of Middle Eastern artifacts 50 years in making, and much more will dazzle audiences during this year's Fall Arts Celebration. For the past 13 years, audiences have experienced a series of six free events each fall, including an art exhibition, academic lecture, holiday celebration and showcases of dance, music and poetry. Great granddaughter of famous artist to perform during GVSU celebration
Grand Valley owns the largest known single public collection of art work and papers by artist Mathias J. Alten. During a special musical event celebrating Alten's legacy, his great granddaughter, Linda Boozer-Vasilaki, will perform using his more than 100-year-old violin while surrounded by his art. Composition competition to examine media overload
Grand Valley students will put their composing skills to the test when they create original pieces of music for an upcoming competition inspired by the current Art Gallery exhibition "Comfortably Numb." The one-minute compositions will be performed by the award-winning New Music Ensemble in rapid succession and judged by a guest panel and the listening audience for various prizes.

New book highlights the life and art of Mathias J. Alten
A new publication spotlights the life and artistic works of Mathias J. Alten, who called the city of Grand Rapids his home. The book, entitled "Mathias J. Alten: An Evolving Legacy," is a hard cover monograph that includes color illustrations and scholarly essays exploring Alten's artistic legacy. Grand Valley State University owns the largest known single public collection of Alten's works and papers in the world.

Art exhibit to spotlight media overload
More than 2,000 pieces of clippings from various magazines and other printed materials will stand nine feet high and span across 45 feet of wall space in the Grand Valley Art Gallery beginning January 16. The exhibit "Comfortably Numb" will be on display through March 31.
