Faculty, staff will fix students' belongings during two free Repair Clinics

Two upcoming events will offer students free opportunities to have ripped clothes, missing buttons, broken zippers, torn backpack straps and more fixed and mended by Grand Valley faculty and staff members. Repair Clinics will take place February 19 on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus and February 27 on the Allendale Campus.

Professor named Mentor of the Year by national organization

Ingrid Johnson, associate professor of physical education, has received recognition for providing advising and mentorship to students and alumni both in and out of the classroom. Johnson has been named Mentor of the Year by the Society of Health and Physical Educators. She is being recognized for her mentoring strategies, which include supporting students with job searching, teaching classes for alumni, sharing professional insights, and more.

Acclaimed authors to discuss their craft during GVSU Writers Series winter events

Two Grand Valley State University writing faculty members will discuss the inner-workings of their creativity and craft during the annual Grand Valley Writers Series. Chris Haven, associate professor of writing, and Gale Thompson, visiting professor, will present a faculty reading on February 5. Haven teaches courses in intermediate and advanced fiction, beginning creative writing, style and techniques, and composition among other topics. Thompson is the author of two chapbooks and the founding editor of Jellyfish Magazine.

Bahamian actors to perform during 25th season of Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival

The 25th anniversary season of the Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival will continue when actors from Nassau in the Bahamas visit the Allendale Campus to perform one of the most critically acclaimed productions ever presented in the Bahamas. The festival's "Bard Beyond Borders" series will present performances of "Sizwe Banzi is Dead" January 31-February 2.

Professor translates children's poetry from Holocaust era for exhibit

French Surrealist poet Robert Desnos brought hope in the face of despair as he wrote children's poetry while living in Nazi-occupied France. Kirsten Strom, professor of art history, is sharing Desnos' vision of hope with a new generation. A selection of her translations and illustrations of Desnos' work is currently on display in the "Apple Blossom and Nightingale" exhibit in Mary Idema Pew Library through January 30.

P.S. Series gives students creative control over three theater productions this winter

The Performance Studio Series at Grand Valley gives upper-level theater students complete creative control over the directing, acting, backstage production, and set and costume design for a series of productions each academic year. Winter P.S. Series performances will begin this month with "Stuart Little" and "Actor's Nightmare" followed by "Gods of Carnage" in February.

Professor preserves medical traditions of Kenyan tribe through catalog

A Grand Valley professor is preserving the medical traditions of an indigenous community in Kenya by cataloging the medicinal plants used by the Maasai tribe. The catalog was created by Kristin Hedges, assistant professor of anthropology, who has been working with the Maasai since serving in the Peace Corps in Kenya from 2000-2003. The Maasai are a group of indigenous people who inhabit areas in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.

Grand Rapids quartet to kick off Arts at Noon winter concert schedule

The 2018-19 Arts at Noon concert series at Grand Valley  continues this winter with multiple free performances by renowned musicians. The winter schedule includes seven performances beginning Wednesday, January 16, with Grand Rapids' own Perugino Quartet.

Holiday concert to be performed on GVSU carillon tower

Grand Valley State University's Beckering Family Carillon will fill the air above Grand Rapids with the sounds of the season during a special holiday concert. The concert will take place on Christmas Eve on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus.
