Grand Rapids quartet to kick off Arts at Noon winter concert series

The Arts at Noon concert series at Grand Valley will continue its 40th season this winter with seven free concerts on the Allendale Campus, beginning with a performance by Grand Rapids' own Perugino Quartet. All Arts at Noon concerts will take place in the Cook-DeWitt Center, begin at noon, and last approximately one hour. Each concert is free and open to the public.

Alumna spreads Laker Effect around the world by ice skating for Disney on Ice

Shanda DeWitt, '11, has been traveling around the world skating alongside 42 other professionals with Disney on Ice since 2016. Her travels have taken her to many areas of the world, including Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and across the U.S. DeWitt currently portrays Elsa from Disney's "Frozen" and said she enjoys spreading her Laker Effect through creating a fun and positive experience for fans of all ages.

Memorial service planned on campus for professor emeritus Robert Mayberry

A memorial service has been planned for Robert Mayberry, professor emeritus of communications and philosophy, who died December 8 at the age of 79. The service will take place January 12 at 3:30 p.m. in the Cook-DeWitt Center on the Allendale Campus. Mayberry, who came to Grand Valley in 1971, was instrumental in the development of both the William James College and the School of Communications.

GVSU receives grant to research cure for Parkinson's disease

A team of researchers from Grand Valley, Van Andel Research Institute and Rush University recently received a $500,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to test a possible cure for Parkinson's disease. The main targets of neuronal loss in Parkinson's disease are dopamine neurons, and this research project will test if the introduction of a modified protein, known as PM-Nato3, will protect those neurons from the toxicity of the disease.

New Music Ensemble included on NPR's list of 100 Best Songs of 2017

Among the likes of Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, Little Big Town, Selena Gomez and Kendrick Lamar, Grand Valley's award-winning New Music Ensemble has been included on NPR's list of the Best 100 Songs of 2017. The ensemble was recognized for its song "Glass Surface" from the album "Return," which debuted in October. "Return," which is comprised of 15 pieces composed by three alumni, is the New Music Ensemble's fourth commercial CD. The album's three composers include Adam Cuthbért, '10, Matthew Fiinch, '15, and Daniel Rhodé, '12. "

GVSU receives $1 million grant to support STEM students

A new project at Grand Valley will financially help academically talented, low-income students seeking an education in science or engineering, while providing them with mentoring and hands-on learning and research opportunities. The project received a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The program will create a set of progressively increasing four-year scholarships for at least 50 Grand Valley students.

Tour the Cook Carillon Tower December 5

The Cook Carillon Tower is a focal point of the Allendale Campus, standing at 100 feet to the top of its spire. The Grand Valley community is invited to tour the massive structure on December 5 from 1:30-3 p.m. Tours will be facilitated by Julianne Vanden Wyngaard, university carillonneur, and light refreshments will be served.

Fall Arts Celebration concert to feature holiday music from France

Fall Arts Celebration will honor French holiday traditions through music when the GVSU Symphony Orchestra accompanies a 90-member chorus, including Grand Valley's University Arts Chorale and high school choir students from East Grand Rapids and Hudsonville. The Grand Rapids Symphony Junior Youth Chorus will also perform. "Noël, Noël, Joyeux Noël: A Celebration of French Music for the Holiday Season" will take place December 4.

Visual and media arts students to exhibit culminating projects during multiple showcases

Senior-level students from the Department of Visual and Media Arts will gain first-hand experience developing and displaying their work before graduation through multiple upcoming exhibitions. Student work will be on display in various venues at Grand Valley and in Grand Rapids November 27-December 14.
