Mammoth and mastodon fossils on loan from public museum

The Department of Geology has acquired mammoth and mastodon pieces on loan from the Grand Rapids Public Museum. The pieces include a skeletal foot, lower jaw and tusk, which are on display in a case outside room 130 in Padnos Hall of Science.

Students, faculty spread Laker Effect in Haiti through service projects

Eleven students from various majors traveled to Haiti this summer on a service-learning trip. During the study abroad expedition, the students distributed 150 water filter systems, led art workshops, taught motor skills activities, and explored the rich history and culture of Haiti.

GVSU Earth Science Week lecture series to feature alumni

In conjunction with international Earth Science Week, a series of lectures will shine a light on the field of geology, careers in the field, and its importance in the world. The lecture series will begin November 6 with Grand Valley alumnus Joshua Ehlich, '14. Since October 1998, the American Geosciences Institute has celebrated Earth Science Week to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and encourage stewardship of the planet.

Field day teaches community about West Michigan natural history

The annual Allendale Community Field Day paired Grand Valley faculty with members of the Allendale community and public school system for a fun day of engaging activities that encouraged outdoor education and environmental awareness. Celebrating the theme of "Things that Happen," participants contributed video messages for a time capsule, learned about the glacial origins of West Michigan, examined earth history through soil and tree cores, and more.
