Big Data Month events to focus on FOIAs, health care, climate change and more
The benefits of data analysis in areas such as journalism, climate change, health care and even analyzing ancient Greek texts, will be examined during multiple Big Data Month events at Grand Valley throughout September.

Professor named a top mathematics educator in the U.S.
David Clark, assistant professor of mathematics, was one of three educators to receive the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member during a special ceremony on August 3 at the Mathematics Association of America's annual MathFest conference in Denver, Colorado. The award honors newer college or university faculty whose teaching has been successful and whose effectiveness in teaching undergraduate math has created an impact on students beyond the classroom

Professor recognized by national organization for contributions to advancement of science
Edward Aboufadel, assistant vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of mathematics, has been named a Fellow by the American Association of the Advancement of Science for his contributions to the advancement of science or its applications. Aboufadel is the first Grand Valley faculty member to be named an AAAS Fellow. He has been a member of AAAS since 1987, serving in a variety of roles, including secretary, an officer in the Mathematics Section of the organization, and task force chair.

Professor to receive inaugural mathematics award
Ted Sundstrom will receive the newly created Daniel Solow Author's Award from the Mathematical Association of America for his book "Mathematical Reasoning: Writing and Proof." The book has been adopted by 47 universities, and downloaded electronically more than 50,000 times.
