GVSU camp teaches students about benefits of renewable energy
Fifty students from 28 local middle schools learned about the benefits of renewable energy and how that form of energy impacts the environment during Grand Valley's Energizing Our World summer camp. 1,200 local students compete in STEM challenges during annual Science Olympiad
More than 1,200 local middle and high school students spent March 17 building bottle rockets, dissecting thermodynamics, solving crimes, constructing towers and much more at Grand Valley during the 34th annual Region 12 Science Olympiad tournament. Grand Valley joins statewide network to support STEM education
Grand Valley State University is now a part of a new regional support system for STEM education in West Michigan. Each of the newly formed 16 regions, referred to as the MiSTEM Network, will receive a portion of nearly $1.3 million in state funding to develop their own strategic plans that create a robust regional STEM culture. Grand Valley's Regional Math and Science Center will lead these initiatives after receiving more than $110,000 in state funding. GVSU center upcycling solar eclipse glasses for schools in South America and Asia
Grand Valley's Regional Math and Science Center will be collecting eclipse glasses through September 15, which will then be sent to schools in South America and Asia through the organization Astronomers Without Borders for when eclipses cross those continents in 2019. Grand Valley is the only designated collection location in the Grand Rapids area.

Solar Eclipse 2017: Faculty weigh in on how, where to watch
On Monday, August 21, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun, and anyone within the "path of totality" will be able to see a rare total solar eclipse.Physics Department faculty will also facilitate activities during the Grand Rapids Public Museum's Eclipse Party. NASA's solar eclipse live stream will be available to watch at select locations on campus as well.

sHaPe Camp introduces local teens to health professions
Teenagers in West Michigan worked with radiation beams, and 3-D imaging and medical laboratory equipment as they explored careers in the health professions field during Grand Valley's Summer Health Activities and Professions Exploration (sHaPe) Camp. The camp, designed for students entering eighth or ninth grade, took place July 17-20 at the Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, located on the Medical Mile on Michigan Street in downtown Grand Rapids.

Camp teaches students benefits of renewable energy
More than 40 students from 23 local middle schools learned about renewable energy during the Energizing Our World camp. The three-day, interactive camp took place on the Allendale Campus June 20-22. During the camp, students participated in hands-on activities to learn about solar, wind and hydro power. From constructing their own wind turbines to building and racing solar-powered cars, the lessons highlighted the benefits of renewable energy, best sustainable practices and the applications of renewable energy.

Alumnus named new director of Regional Math and Science Center
Kristofer Pachla, '08 and '09, brings to the university a vast and varied background working in both K-12 and higher education. He is currently completing his doctoral degree in education policy and STEM teacher professional development from George Mason University. Pachla also serves as an adjunct professor of physics at Grand Valley. He will begin his role on April 17.
