Colin Woodard: American Nations

According to journalist and historian Colin Woodard, North America is made up of eleven distinct nations. He discussed the history of our continent, offering a revolutionary and revelatory take on American identity, and how the conflicts between them have shaped our past and mold our future. From the Deep South to the Far West, to Yankeedom to El Norte, Woodard revealed how each region continues to uphold its distinguishing ideals and identities today.
Biography
Colin Woodard is an award winning journalist and writer. He has reported for more than fifty foreign countries and six continents. A native of Maine, he lives in the midcoast area.
He is the State and National Affairs Writer at the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. He received a 2012 George Polk Award for Education Reporting for his special report, “The profit motive behind virtual schools in Maine” in the Portland Press Herald. He was also a finalist for a 2013 Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.
His 2007 book, The Republic of Pirates, is being transformed into the upcoming NBC television drama Crossbones, starring John Malkovich. The Republic of Pirates is set during the golden age of piracy and centers on the pirate Blackbeard.
His fourth book, American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America, won the 2012 Maine Literary Award for Non-Fiction and was named one of the best books of 2011 by The New Republic and The Globalist.
