Welcome to Health Information Management
Health information management (HIM) is the practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care. HIM organizes and manages health information data by ensuring its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security. Health information managers regularly communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.
Grand Valley State University's undergraduate HIM program is offered through the College of Health Professions' School of Interdisciplinary Health.

HIM Announcement: Course Delivery Format Change Coming in Fall 2025
Beginning with the Fall 2025 cohort, the Health Information Management degree program will be delivered in a hybrid format. Courses will have a limited number of required in-person/on-campus class meetings each semester. The balance of coursework will be completed online.
CIS classes will continue to be offered in the online format.

Program Overview
Grand Valley State University's Health Information Management (B.S.) program sits within the College of Health Professions' School of Interdisciplinary Health.
Students pursuing this degree will also complete a minor in health care information systems through the School of Computing and Information Systems (CIS).
HIM classes are offered in a hybrid format, and CIS classes are fully online.
Students interested in the Health Information Management program should arrange to meet with a CHP Student Services Advisor early and periodically, to determine progress toward and eligibility for admission into the program.
HIM Admissions
The Health Information Management program is a secondary admission program.
Completed applications for fall entry are due March 1 for Priority admission. Late applications from qualified students will be accepted on a rolling basis, until all seats are filled.

What is Secondary Admission?
Secondary admission means students must complete a specific set of courses, at or above a required GPA level. Once students have completed these requirements, the next step is to submit a secondary admission application.
Secondary admission applications are open to current GVSU students, as well as those already admitted to GVSU as transfer students.
Accreditation Statement
The HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT accreditor of GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for BACCALAUREATE degree in HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT has been reaffirmed through 2027. Student Achievement Data
Graduate Placement Rates:
April 2022, 18 students graduated from the HIM Program and 16 out of the 18 students have obtained employment within the HIM profession.
April 2023, 26 students graduated from the HIM Program and 19 of the 26 students have obtained employment within the HIM profession.
Yearly Attrition and Retention Data:
Academic year 2021-2022, there were 23 students that began in the fall of 2021 and 3 students left the program at the end of the winter 2022 semester (13% attrition). Retained 20 students.
Academic year 2022-2023, there were 21 students that began in the fall of 2022 and 1 student left the program at the end of winter 2023 semester (5% attrition). Retained 20 students.
Graduation Rates:
100% of the students who were scheduled to graduate in April 2022 were successful in doing so (18 were scheduled to graduate and 18 students did graduate)
100% of the students who were scheduled to graduate in April 2023 were successful in doing so (26 were scheduled to graduate and 26 students did graduate)
