Change in age or school status of a dependent

If your dependent has reached the age of 26 and is under age 27, graduated from college or is no longer a full-time student they are no longer eligible to be on your health insurance.

  • Notify the Benefits Office within 60 days of the life event by logging into the eBenefits site.
    • A document indicating the last date of classes, or the graduation date will have to be uploaded. This date will be the last day of the dependent's coverage under your health insurance.

If you have a dependent who is over 26 and under age 27 who is now attending school full time they are now eligible to enroll in medical coverage through Grand Valley State University.

  • Notify the Benefits Office within 30 days of the life event by logging into the eBenefits site.
    • You will need to upload the student schedule or letter from the school they are attending verifying their full-time status.
    • The student schedule or letter of verification from the school should contain the following information: College Name (typed not handwritten), Dependent Name (typed not handwritten), credit hours, and your name (an employee of Grand Valley State University).
  • Enroll dependent into GVSU benefit plan

If your dependent is over age 26 and under age 27 and received a letter in the mail from their health insurance provider stating that they are going to lose coverage without proof of full-time student status they will need to:

  • Submit the student schedule or letter from the school they are attending verifying their full-time status to the Benefits Office.
    • The student schedule or letter of verification from the school should contain the following information: College Name (typed not handwritten), Dependent Name (typed not handwritten), credit hours, and your name (an employee of Grand Valley State University).
  • If the dependent is no longer a full-time student please contact your HR Generalist indicating their last date of being a full-time student, this will be the last date of their coverage.
