Description

The contemporary world is a stressful place to live. This is particularly true for those of use with one or more marginalized identities and/or involved in advocacy and activism work. Chronic stress can have devastating consequences on your body, your mood, and your behavior. This workshop will explore simple, yet effective techniques for supporting personal and community well-being through creativity and creative practice. Engaging in creative activities has been shown to have multiple positive impacts on well-being - and it doesn't require expensive supplies or more than a few minutes! We'll cover the importance of taking time to care for ourselves - especially in the midst of caring for others - and some of the science that explains why creative practice is good for us. Most of the session will be spent sharing (and practicing!) multiple creative wellness practices that can be used individually or in a group setting. For those joining up virtually, all you'll need is some paper and a writing utensil - though you might want to also have some markers, colored pencils, or other crafts supplies handy if you so choose.

Learning Outcomes - Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of caring for oneself, even as we advocate and care for others.
  • Describe how creative practices positively impact our brains and nervous systems.
  • Identify at least 3 creative practices they can integrate into their own lives or share with others

Presenters:

  • AJ Young (He/Him/His, They/Them/Theirs) Coordinator of Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction
