GVSU Reaffirms Support and Policy Protections for LGBTQIA+ Community
November 01, 2018
Dear Campus Community,
Recent reports of the federal government planning to narrow the definition of gender under the Title IX federal civil rights law are causing concern on campuses around the country, including our own.
As this news brings a high level of uneasiness and distress for our transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex community members, it is worth reinforcing that Grand Valley State University is committed to inclusiveness and community.
While much is uncertain, Grand Valley’s commitment to protecting people of all social identities from harassment and discrimination, including those of diverse gender identities and expressions, is unwavering.
- GVSU reaffirms policy protections for LGBTQ community (July 2018)
- Affirmation of Gender Identity and Expression Inclusion (February 2017)
We will take every available step to ensure our campus environment is one in which all students, faculty, and staff can be their full authentic selves. Our university processes will continue to recognize and honor our community members in alignment with their gender identity.
Any member of the Grand Valley family who needs support or information on resources should contact the Division of Inclusion and Equity ((616) 331-3296 or [email protected]), Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center ((616) 331-2530 or [email protected]), or Title IX Office ((616) 331-9530 or [email protected]). Additionally, community spaces are available through our trans and non-binary weekly evening program for students, the LGBT Faculty and Staff Association, and Queer and Trans 101 trainings for student, faculty, and staff allies.
Very sincerely,
Jesse M. Bernal, Ph.D.
Vice President for Inclusion and
Equity
