What is Eid al-Fitr?

  • Eid al-Fitr, commonly referred to as “Eid,” means the “Festival of Breaking the Fast” and marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan.
  • Eid falls on the first day after Ramadan and, depending upon where it is celebrated, can last up to three days in some countries.
  • Eid is celebrated in many different ways around the world, but it is always a time for families and communities to come together.
  • Many will partake in special prayers, wear new clothes, donate to charity, exchange gifts, and feast!
  • The fast is often broken by eating a date, known as “the fruit of paradise.”
