Description

What is Baisakhi?

  • Baisakhi, or Vaisakhi, is important day for many Hindus and Sikhs alike.
  • It is a celebration of the harvest, of the beginning of a new solar year, and, for Sikhs, of the founding of the Khalsa, or the Sikh religious community.
  • Some Sikhs will visit their local gurdwara, a place of worship in Sikhism, and participate in the Nagar Kirtan, a procession with singing, chanting, and often gatka (traditional Sikh martial arts).
