Description
What is Eid al-Adha?
- Eid al-Adha ("Festival of the Sacrifice" in Arabic) commemorates the sacrifice of the Prophet Ibrahim.
- It is a major holiday in Islam and marks the culmination of the annual hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca.
- Traditionally, the holiday is spent celebrating with family, friends and loved ones, often involving wearing new clothes and the giving of gifts.
- One of the central rituals on Eid al-Adha is Qurbani, the act of sacrificing a sheep, goat, or cow. Traditionally, one third of the meat from the animal would go to poor or vulnerable people, one third to the family, and the last third to their neighbors.
- Depending upon the country, Eid al-Adha can last between three and four days. As the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date of Eid al-Adha and all Islamic holidays will change each year.
