Description

What is Muharram?

  • Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of four sacred months (as is Ramadan).
  • It is typically for time of internal reflection and often the setting of goals. Some Muslims may choose to fast, as well.
  • The 10th day of this month is Ashura, which holds different meaning for different branches of Islam:
    • For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is the day God saved Moses and his people from Pharaoh by parting the Red Sea.
    • For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning and remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.
