Description
What is Janmashtami?
- Janmashtami is the birthday of the Hindu god, Krishna, who is revered as the eighth avatar of Vishnu.
- While the day is heavily celebrated in the areas of India associated with Krishna's birth, Janmashtami is an important holiday for Hindus around the world.
- The day is often marked with a daylong fast until midnight, the traditional hour of Krishna's birth.
- A central activity is a “Krishna puja,” a devotional form of worship using a form or an image of the god. After midnight and the breaking of the fast, statues of Krishna are often bathed in milk and water, dressed in new clothes, and venerated in homes and temples around the world
