Description

What is Navratri?

  • Navratri is a major Hindu festival celebrating Durga, the supreme mother goddess, and the divine feminine more generally.
  • The festival takes place over nine nights, due to the story of Durga's battle with and ultimate victory over an evil demon in a battle which lasted nine days and nights.
  • The holiday is celebrated all over the world, with many choosing to fast, only having milk, water, fruit and nuts during the day, followed by a full meal after sunset. Some people only have water and a simple meal at night.
  • Dancing is also a common theme of the global celebrations.
