What is Bodhi Day?

  • Bodhi Day is a Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day Siddhartha Gautama attained awakening or enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. It was in this moment that he became the Buddha.

  • In Japan and in many Western countries, the day is celebrated on December 8th, following the Western calendar. In other parts of East Asia, the date changes yearly according to the lunar calendar.

  • Individuals may choose to commemorate the event through meditation, study of the Dharma, chanting of Buddhist texts, or performing kind acts towards other beings.
