Description
What is Shavuot?
- Shavuot (which means "weeks" in Hebrew) is a two-day holiday celebrated 7 weeks after Passover (Pesach).
- Though it began as an ancient grain harvest festival, Shavuot has long been identified as the anniversary of the Torah being given to Moses on Mount Sinai.
- Shavuot is often celebrated by abstaining from work, lighting candles each night, special Torah recitations during synagogue services, and eating festive meals, some of which may include specific dairy foods.
- Some Jews may practice Tikkun Leil Shavuot by staying up all night to read and study Torah on the eve of Shavuot.
