Description
What is Sukkot?
- Sukkot is a joyous, weeklong festival celebrating the autumn harvest. The holiday has also come to commemorate the 40 years of Jewish wandering in the desert, living in huts (sukkot).
- The festival is characterized by the erection of huts made of branches with prayers of thanksgiving to God for the fruitfulness of the land. It is traditional to eat and, for some, to sleep in a sukkah for seven days.
- Some Jews will partake in fasting during this holy season.
- As with all Jewish holidays, Sukkot begins at sunset on the first evening.
