Description

What is Hanukkah?

  • Hanukkah is the eight-day Jewish celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE.
  • It is commonly referred to as the "Festival of Lights," though hanukkah literally translates to "dedication" in Hebrew.
  • During Hanukkah, Jews will gather together with family and friends each night to light a candle in the menorah to commemorate the small amount of oil that miraculously sustained the light in the Temple for eight days.
