Description
What is Ramadan?
- Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.
- During Ramadan, most Muslims abstain from food and water from pre-dawn to sunset, though some are exempt from fasting. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called iftar.
- Ramadan celebrations often involve gatherings and prayers that go late into the night. It is not unusual for those partaking to be up past midnight for prayers and then get up early to eat before dawn.
- The dates for Ramadan change each year as it is based on a lunar calendar.
- Ramadan culminates with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-Breaking.
