On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, 10 am, Professor Jason Crouthamel will discuss a central question that still haunts our society today: How could a modern, civilized, educated society bring Adolf Hitler to power? The program is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids, Temple Emanuel, Joseph and Mary Stevens Holocaust Education Fund, Kaufman Interfaith Institute, OLLI at Aquinas, and Congregation Ahavas Israel. The program will be hosted by Temple Emanuel.
Professor Jason Crouthamel will discuss a central question that still haunts our society today: How could a modern, civilized, educated society bring Adolf Hitler to power? One of the most disturbing aspects of the history of the Holocaust is that it was rooted in the long-term history of religious-based and racial prejudice towards Jews. These deep-seated prejudices fueled the hatred and indifference of ‘ordinary’ people who would support the Nazis and carry out the destruction of their neighbors. This presentation will give an overview of precursors leading to the rise of the Nazis, including the history of antisemitism, the effects of the First World War, and the immediate political and economic conditions that led to the Nazi seizure of power. It will also present scholarship on the history of conformity and consent that enabled Nazi attacks on Jewish citizens in the years leading up to the Second World War.
