Description

What is Yom Kippur?

  • Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement, and is considered by many to be the most important holiday within the Jewish tradition.
  • It begins at sundown the first night and continues through nightfall on the second day.
  • Yom Kippur concludes the “10 days of repentance” that begin with Rosh Hashanah.
  • According to tradition, it is on Yom Kippur that God decides each person’s fate, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year.
  • Essential to the day is refraining from work of all types. Many Jews will also mark the day by attending synagogue, fasting, wearing white to symbolize purity, making charitable offerings, and generally surrounding themselves with family and friends.
