2024 GVSU IT Service Award Recipients

The annual GVSU IT Service Awards acknowledge outstanding service and provide a time to celebrate these individuals within the Information Technology Division. The awards program, under the leadership of Information Technology Community Advocates (ITCA), brings peer endorsement and recognition to professional accomplishments.

  • Service Excellence – The Service Excellent Award recognizes an individual who has gone above and beyond professional responsibilities in contributing his/her expertise and service to the GVSU community, a professional organization, or the local/national/international community.
  • Innovation – The Innovation Award recognizes an individual who has innovative ideas and practices that benefit Information Technology and the university.  This could include methods to improve cost efficiency, changes in procedures, creating new programs or services, or leading new initiatives.
  • Leadership – The Leadership Award recognizes an individual who has made notable contributions that have influenced positive change at GVSU. This could include members who have shown adaptability, mentorship, exceptional teamwork, motivation, and lasting other contributions. 

 

Cody Eding

2024 Leadership Award Recipient - Cody Eding

The 2024 GVSU IT Service Award for Leadership is awarded to Cody Eding. He embodies true leadership qualities-sharp, humble, and approachable. Cody is always willing to dig deep into a problem, pulling apart concepts with patience and without judgment. Whether guiding a teammate through a challenge or connecting them with the right resources, he is always ready to support.

Over the past year, Cody has introduced critical new concepts and workflows to the Enterprise Architecture team. This includes leading presentations on Git and GitHub. They have also played a key role in championing automation efforts and collaborating with colleagues to implement Jenkins, which has significantly streamlined team processes.[JB1] 

His leadership style is a perfect example of "leading from behind." Cody encourages colleagues to take the initiative and grow, offering experience and insight in a way that fosters independence and confidence. He lights the path so others can forge ahead, which is rare and invaluable in today’s fast-paced world.

2024 Innovation Award Recipient - Hunter Bridwell

Hunter is receiving the 2024 GVSU IT Service Award for Innovation for consistently demonstrating a deep commitment to integrating innovative technologies into practical classroom applications. His dedication has led to the creation of the Student Technology Innovation Guild, or STING, a groundbreaking program that unites talented students and faculty to develop cutting-edge educational tools.

Under Hunter's leadership, students have gained valuable hands-on experience in real-world technology development, preparing them for future careers. His passion for innovation has shone through projects like the VR Courtroom experience and a virtual lab environment. His efforts have earned both national and local recognition, further highlighting GVSU’s forward-thinking approach to educational technology.

Hunter's vision, dedication, and care for students and colleagues have lasting impacts on our community. Their work not only pushes the boundaries of educational innovation but also brings immense pride to GVSU.

2024 Service Excellence Award Recipient - Johanna Hoekstra

Johanna Hoekstra is the recipient of the 2024 GVSU IT Service Award for Service Excellence. Johanna has been a shining example of dedication, collaboration, and commitment throughout our division. She has a remarkable ability to work with everyone, from students to senior leadership. She consistently dedicates time and expertise to solving complex problems and offering invaluable guidance to our students.

One of Johanna's most impactful contributions was helping our division transition to Workday. Her leadership and support throughout this process was invaluable, ensuring the transition was smooth and effective.

Her leadership and vision for community building have also been exceptional and truly impactful. Johanna founded our division’s first-ever party planning committee, which has led to massively successful IT celebrations, strengthening the sense of community and camaraderie within the team.
