Introducing Okta, a New Way to Manage Passwords
April 20, 2023
In our efforts to continually improve, Information Technology (IT) has heard from many of you that password changes and multi-factor authentication (MFA) are frustrating experiences. We are making some changes that should improve your daily experience.
IT is partnering with Okta to create efficiencies in password updates, multi-factor authentication and technology access through an entitlement portal.
Password Reset Update:
Beginning May 3, 2023, password changes will only be
required once every 18 months.
This change will take effect the next time you update your
password. If you have recently changed your password, you do not need
to wait six months to take advantage of this benefit. You can change
your password at any time. Please see the following knowledge base
article Forgot
Password & Updating Passwords.
MFA Requirement Change:
The use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) has become a
standard part of daily life for everything from bank accounts to
iTunes accounts to GVSU resources.
MFAs were previously saved for 24 hours per device. Starting
May 3, MFA will only be required once every seven days. Please see Remembering
my MFA for 7 days for how to use this function and the
restrictions that may apply.
GVSU Entitlement Portal:
Finally, as GVSU has extended its technology footprint, it
can be difficult to log in to all the different applications. GVSU
is pleased to launch a new entitlement portal, which can be
accessed at my.gvsu.edu.
All products supported by central IT should be accessible
here with only one login required per device per browser You will be
prompted to enter a username and password once per day from days two
through six; however, you will not be required to use MFA until day seven.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact IT Services at [email protected]. We appreciate your assistance in maintaining the security of GVSU's digital assets.
